Bosque del Apache iis one of 568 National Wildlife Refuges administered, maintained, and managed by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service, Located in the Rio Grande Valley of central New Mexico, the Refuge provides a winter home for thousands of Sandhill Cranes and Snow Geese.
Like so many conservation programs operated by the United States Government, the National Wildlife Refuge program was started by President Theodore Roosevelt. The program maintains and restores habitats, provides sustenance for wildlife, and looks first to the well-being of the animals and plants that are native to the land.
