Gulls Playing in the Wind, Corner Brook, Nfld

Tall Tales

I never thought of birds playing until I read an account of crows surfing the wind in the book Gifts of the Crow by John Marzluff and Tony Angell. In Gros Morne National Park in Newfoundland I saw a half dozen or so crows who seemed to be playing king of the castle on a weather vane atop a lighthouse. Later, from a bluff overlooking the Gulf of St. Lawrence, near Corner Brook, I captured a video of a flock of gulls sweeping, twisting, and swooping in a high wind. This epub contains depictions of their flight paths created from stacked frames from the video. I think the gulls were playing. What do you think?
